The Hmong Journey

Embroidered narratives: The Hmong Journey through Story Cloths

April 3 through June 29. La Crosse Heritage Center, 506 Main Street

Free museum admissions funded by the La Crosse Arts Board.

La Crosse County Historical Society is proud to partner with Dr. Vincent Her and student Yia Vue from UW-La Crosse Archaeology and Anthropology Department to share and elevate the important historical stories of our Hmong friends and neighbors.

The exhibit is FREE and open to the public thanks to a grant from the City of La Crosse - Arts Board.

This exhibit will feature 18 Story Cloths from the La Crosse County Historical Society's artifact collection and loaned from the Hmong Cultural and Community Center. This exhibit commemorates the 50th anniversary of Hmong resettlement in the United States and illustrates the history of the Hmong and Hmong Americans through various narratives, including folktales, traditional events, daily life in the mountain villages of Laos, the Secret War, and resettlement.

We Won! (mostly)

Congratulations to all the organizers, door-knockers, phone-bankers, text-bankers, sign-posters, letter to the editor-writers, sign-deliverers, postcard-writers, donors, supporters and great local and state  candidates who made this such a successful election. We needed that.

(And, by the way, Elon Musk blatantly broke Wisconsin election law and should be charged and prosecuted.)

While the bad voter ID amendment passed, there's even some hope there if we can continue chipping away at the walls of our gerrymandered minority-rule prison. "The legislature shall by law establish acceptable forms of photographic identification, and the legislature may by law establish exceptions to the requirement under this subsection."

The next Scott Walker holdover Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice up for badly needed replacement: Rebecca Bradley. That election is in April 2026. Keep it up.

Sign-making for April 5

From La Crosse Hands Off organizer Tasha L:

We are little more than a week away from our first of what I expect to be one of many more events to come ... as these changes are greatly impacting all of us in many ways.

On April 5th, the signs we make will share our stories of how the ineptitude of Trump and Musk's decisions have dire consequences for our future personally, nationally and worldwide. So, when it comes to thinking about what you want to put on your signs, think about what matters to you. Whether that be the climate, our bodies, our libraries, our government, our schools, our healthcare, public parks let the message be "HANDS OFF!"

In order to prepare for the event, I will be hosting a sign making event on Friday, April 4 at the Main Library in the Creation Space. I plan on being there from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm. We are able to use materials that the library has but I would encourage anyone to bring in donations of craft items that you are no longer using as the library has graciously allowed us to utilize the space.

If you are unable to make signs for the event or unable to attend the sign making event, we will be making extra signs with "hands off..." and bring markers so that you can fill in the blank. I would also encourage people to repurpose signs from the April 1st election, any past elections, cardboard boxes, etc., to reduce waste as well as cost for everyone.
